February 2024 – Chemical Response Training – Competencies for Awareness Level Responders

A training for awareness level personnel who, in the course of their normal duties, could encounter an emergency and involve hazardous materials/weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and who are expected to recognize the presence of the hazardous materials/WMD, protect themselves, call for trained personnel, and secure the area.
Topics covered in this course include:

  • A brief overview of NIMS and how it is used to manage an event
  • A discussion about the types of resources needed to respond to a chemical emergency (both pre-hospital and hospital)
  • How to develop a specialty response team and why it’s important.
  • Understanding the difference between exposure and contamination.
  • What are the types of chemical detection equipment available?
    • Demonstration of air monitoring equipment and pH paper with samples
  • A discussion or assessment of what equipment they have available.
  • A discuss and possible demonstration of the kind of PPE needed for chemical response. How is it different from other PPE?
    • Proper donning and doffing techniques
  • Decontamination types
    • Demonstration of decon technique
