Patient Safety Learning Network

The West Virginia Hospital Association (WVHA) has partnered with the American Hospital Association’s Health Research and Education Trust (HRET) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) on the Patient Safety Learning Network to support West Virginia hospitals in improving the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores.  Hospitals have the opportunity to learn and share patient safety best practices as well as receive assistance from both hospital peers and subject matter experts.

The HCAHPS tool is a standardized survey of the experiences of adult inpatients with aspects of hospital care that are important to patients, covering eight core areas:

Nurse Communication
Doctor Communication
Responsiveness
Pain Management
Medication Communication
Cleanliness
• Quietness
• Discharge Information

HCAHPS accounts for 30% of each hospital’s score in the Medicare Value-based Purchasing program.

Participation in this Network will, at no cost, help hospitals achieve new levels of performance on HCAHPS while also creating a better experience for patients, families and staff.
