ALTOs in the ED

In this webinar Rachael Duncan, PharmD, BCPS, BCCCP will discuss the use of ALTO medications in the emergency department and explain the process and policy changes that need to occur prior to the implementation of ALTO therapies. Ms. Duncan will also share the successes and lesson learned from the ALTO in the ED Colorado pilot.

Rachael Duncan is a clinical pharmacist at Swedish Medical Center, a level 1 trauma, comprehensive stroke, and burn center in the Denver metro area. She spends most of her time practicing in the various Critical Care Units as well as the Emergency Department (ED). She is also the PGY1 Residency Program Director.

In 2016, Rachael led an initiative to decrease opioid usage in the Swedish ED by utilizing the Alternatives to Opioids (ALTO) approach. Her efforts sparked the interest of the Colorado Hospital Association, who collaborated with multiple other state organizations in 2017 to replicate the pilot at 10 other Colorado EDs. Subsequently, opioid usage in those EDs fell by 36%. The effort continues in 2018, with over 140 Colorado EDs joining round two of the pilot.
